Winning Big: The power of awards for your tourism business

As someone who has worked within the tourism industry for many years, been successful in winning numerous tourism awards for businesses I have been involved in, and been a judge for tourism awards at a national level, I am often asked “Is there really any value for me to enter my business into an award?”

This is a pretty fair question, considering how time-consuming some of the applications can be. So, let’s explore this a little.

Recognition is considered one of the main benefits that comes with winning an award - of course you have to enter it first. Winning can help in establishing your business as a leader in the industry, as well as your region, and serve as a valuable marketing tool. It can also be a powerful way to differentiate your business from your competitors and help you build trust and credibility with potential customers. Being the recipient of a tourism award can also assist in demonstrating credibility to your distribution partners.

Inspiration and motivation is another benefit for winning awards, as it can be a powerful way of recognising the hard work and dedication of your employees. I have seen staff moral boosted significantly, on many occasions, following the winning of an award. In an industry where employees can work long hours and face unique challenges, this can be especially important.

Networking with other tourism professionals is another benefit to entering awards. The ceremonies and events that come from these provide a great opportunity to connect with other business owners and industry leaders, and enable you to share best practices, while building relationships that can lead to new business opportunities.

In addition to the immediate benefits that come from winning an award, perhaps one of the most important benefits is the opportunity to reflect on your business and identify areas for improvement.

The process of entering in itself, can provide a number of great opportunities for learning and growth. Typically, an awards program may require the completion of a detailed application or participation in interviews or presentations.

This provides yourself as a business owner a valuable way to reflect on your business, as well as identifying any areas for improvement. You don’t need to win the award, as the process of preparing the submission alone can help refine your business strategy and improve your operation.

Ultimately, entering awards can be a valuable way to drive growth and success for your business. Whether you're a small accommodation provider or a large resort, a lone tour guide or a major transport operator, there are awards programs out there that can help to showcase your business and highlight the unique value proposition of your business.

Of course, and I stress from experience, it is important to keep in mind that entering awards can be a time-consuming, daunting and sometimes expensive process. Depending on the award, you may need to devote significant time and resources to preparing your application. However, for many, the benefits of entering awards far outweigh the costs.

In conclusion, there are many compelling reasons why you should consider entering awards for your business or product. These include building credibility and reputation, to networking and learning opportunities. And just entering an award program in itself can be an excellent way to drive growth and success for your business. So, if you're considering entering an award program, take the time to research the options and find the one that's right for your business.

Here in the Territory, home to this author, one such award has recently opened for nominations. The Brolga Northern Territory Tourism Awards. With 26 categories covering all sectors of tourism, there could be a gold medal just waiting for your business www.brolgaawards.com.au.

With a win in one of these categories, there is automatic entry into the Australian Tourism Awards. Now that’s winning big!

So, with a little hard work and dedication (and don’t forget the passion) you could be well on your way to earning the recognition and success that your business deserves. Believe me, you will never forget the sheer excitement, exhilaration and emotion that will come from winning your first business award.
