Identity fraud is a risk to all of us, both as individuals and as businesses, simply because we deal with so many pieces of information on a daily basis. To criminals, a discarded bank statement could be enough to allow them to start building up a picture of you, your customers or your business. All it takes is one mistake.

Identity fraud is a real and serious threat to all of us today, especially if we don't take steps to protect our identities.

Shredding all confidential paper is strongly advised to ensure sensitive documents don't fall into the wrong hands. Every day you deal with thousands of pieces of information such as reports, business plans, financial data, customer pricing, names and addresses.

Don't simply throw it away! Take better steps to protect your identity and confidential information. Shred anything you wouldn't want in the hands of a stranger!

TOP TIPS FOR BEATING IDENTITY FRAUD

Precautions for individuals:

  • Treat your personal information and the documents that carry it as you would treat any valuables.
  • If you are disposing of any documents which contain your personal or company information, ensure they are destroyed.
  • Regularly update your computer firewall, anti-virus, anti-spyware programs and delete your web browser and cookie history.
  • Use a variety of strong passwords for different online accounts and never share them or write them down.
  • If you are asked to supply any personal information by e-mail, mail, the phone or by any other means always check them out and if in doubt do not disclose.

Precautions for businesses:

  • Make sure that all staff are fully aware of the risk of identity fraud. Create a clear set of guidelines concerning the handling, storage, sharing and disposal of sensitive information, both online and off-line.
  • Always make sure that unwanted information is disposed of properly and securely. As well as paper, don't forget to shred CDs and always make sure that the information on old computers is wiped clean before throwing them out.
