Fuel consumption

One of the easiest ways for businesses and consumers to save money when maintaining a vehicle is to have low fuel consumption. The amount of fuel used by a vehicle has become an important comparison tool and has led to the development of mandatory fuel consumption standards.

The Motor Vehicle Standards Act 1989 covers national safety and environmental requirements for all vehicles manufactured in Australia. Under the Act, manufacturers and importers must also comply with the Australian Design Rules (ADRs) that cover fuel consumption labelling requirements.

If you sell vehicles in Australia, or plan on buying a vehicle for your business, it's important to know that a fuel consumption label must be attached to the front windscreen of all new vehicles sold. The label indicates how many litres of fuel a vehicle will use, and enables you and your customers to compare vehicles with good fuel efficiency and lower greenhouse impact.
