Hiring people from overseas
Employing workers from overseas can give your business a real advantage, by introducing new ideas and technologies.
People who migrate to Australia are entitled to work here, but people visiting Australia may or may not have the right to work. Check a visitor's work rights to ensure that you employ only those people entitled to work in Australia.
All immigration to Australia is controlled by the federal government through the Department of Immigration and Citizenship (DIAC). There are numerous migrant work visas with differing selection criteria - you should seek further information about visa qualification from DIAC.
To help you find overseas workers, DIAC has a free online Skill Matching Database. The database holds information on potential workers from a variety of trades and professions who are genuinely interested in living and working in Australia.
What to do...
- Visit the DIAC website for information on how to check the work rights of people visiting Australia - see the Australian Immigration Guide on Work Rights, and Australia Needs Skills Events.
- Check the immigration status of potential employees by accessing the Visa Entitlement Verification Online (VEVO) tool.
- Search the free Skill Matching Database on the DIAC website to find skilled overseas workers.
- Get help with finding overseas skilled workers in your state or territory.
